Accessibility and informational barriers to an age friendly railway

Purpose Against a backdrop in an increase the number of older people United Kingdom (UK) and amount travel per person for this age group, using railway is decline. The purpose paper to report on investigation first step towards ascertaining why through audits issues problems rolling stock station platforms. Design/methodology/approach Rolling were carried out by across rail network South West UK. A total 72.2 hours auditing took place different sizes types stock. Findings Two main themes found both audits: accessibility information provision. With regards accessibility, boarding especially alighting from train was key issue. Across stations luminance, issue with places being too dark or moving that bright dark. Use stairs at between platforms, when crowded In terms information, signage cluttered, small, hidden inconsistent audible announcements difficult decipher. Practical implications There must be improvements made railways help feel more safe secure them. It suggested free level train, but also entrance carriage. Better needed throughout trains, large repeated fonts used. Lighting needs revisited ensure areas are well-lit platforms onboard. Further research look these findings relation slip, trips fall accident rates. Originality/value very little people’s perceptions barriers use.
